Thank you. "Courageous and hopeful" brought tears to my eyes. My immigrant father was difficult and when I think of him 2 years after his passing it's not always positively. But thinking about him in the context of this article was a release.
fun fact - Alicia Lieberman was married to my dad's best friend from high school onward. He is the person who introduced my family to Buddhism and me to environmentalism and being a vegetarian for decades. I talked to her for The Stolen Year. Her work is such a gift!
love this connection! I also just learned she was in a longtime Talmud study group with another friend of mine who is in a totally separate sphere from how I met her...so tangled, we are.
(also seems like the intro to Buddhism was significant considering your dad's work?)
Brillianr piece on the duality in healing. The framing of angels alongside ghosts isdeeply insightful, especially how Lieberman and Reyes build on hope and courage as foundational assets. It challenges the trauma-only lens that sometimes dominates these conversations. Helping parents reconnect with thier own experiences of safety and joy seems like it could unlock deeper resilience than focusing solely on what went wrong.
It was so moving to hear Alicia and Vilma share their work on Sunday—I’ve been thinking about it ever since. And I’m happy to have finally met you, Courtney, and to swap mutual midwife stories! (Also, amen to recognizing that we live “in a time when public school teachers aren’t treated like the foundational public leaders they are.” I’m on a mission to help change that.)
Thank you for this hopeful perspective during this Advent season of hope- there are angels, as well as ghosts, are in our lives.

Extremely - Marc is the person who invited Dad to India for what became The Jew in the Lotus https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/08/us/marc-lieberman-dead.html
Gracious and generous. Thank you.

Excellent suggestion! I’m giving this the support that you have constructively taught me about here. Thanks! DD
