10 questions for your autumn equinox
A friend and reader requested this one - a list of reflection and/or discussion questions for the autumn equinox. Get your journal and a pen out, or gather a group of beloved around the kitchen table, and dig into these. (I’m thinking of us sweeties in the northern hemisphere here, but understand this is very different for you southerners!)
What is one form of nourishment that your mind/body/heart is craving as things get darker?
What is one dream that needs to hibernate for now rather than being that thing constantly pawing at you when you’re trying to rest?
Where and with whom could you try easier?
What is one kind of cozy gathering that you want to plan with your people before the year is up?
What is a book you need to prioritize reading instead of scrolling on your phone?
What is one place you’ve been skimming—either literally or metaphorically—that you want to honor with a deep dive?
What is one thing in your life that needs to fall away and return to the earth?
What grief are you carrying privately that you could carry with others? What joy could you share?
The days are shorter - what is one activity that you want to stop doing?
The nights are longer - what are your dreams telling you about your longing?

One dream that needs to hibernate is my habit (at age 84) is one of fear for the future of our country’s democracy. I resolve to read books about hope, to continue daily reading of Heather Cox Richardson’s substack. As a historian, she reminds us that our country has weathered many challenges in the past. Our immediate family, adult grandchildren included, will VOTE BLUE in just a few weeks. 🩵
Thank you for these beautiful questions, Courtney. One place I am trying easier (I love that phrase!) is with my parents who are conservative Republicans and as an added layer of complexity, my Dad is going through chemo right now. I am holding all things gently, remembering and honoring the impermanence of all beings and situations. That helps with my immediate family and our country right now.
